When I get home Darron is pissed. He takes one look at my get-up and crosses his arms over his chest.

“Have fun tonight?”

“We were out for a drive…” I start.

“We were just doing some undercover work,” Shauna says, flitting around the room.

“Let me get you some blood,” I tell her, making a beeline for the kitchen. Darron follows me, all scowls and disapproving glances.

“At any point when you were making poor life decisions, did you think of Shauna?” Darron stage whispers at me.

I pour a tall cup of blood. A year ago I would have been grossed out by the fact that Shauna was going to drink it, but now I don’t even think about it. I just grab the sugar, add some heaping spoonfuls and give it a good swirl.

“Of course I thought about Shauna!” I whisper yell back. “I couldn’t drug her. And she’s going batty not being able to sleep. So I asked her if she wanted to come along. She jumped at the chance.”

“Of course she did!” Darron doesn’t even bother to use his inside voice. “She’s Shauna!” He takes the cup of blood away from me and adds a bunch more sugar. “Did you even think about Shit?!”

“I think about shit all the time,” I tell him confused.

“Shit. Your puppy. Kitten. Dalmanther. Thing,” Darron clarifies. “You didn’t crate him before you left. He chewed through my shoe collection. My shoe collection, Paige.”

“Oh. Shit, shit.” I look around for the puppy. “Please tell me that you’re not going to be sporting a new Dalmanther coat like some messed up drag version of Cruella De Ville.”

“No. But it was close. I put him in your room. I have no idea what he’s doing up there. But whatever it is, it serves you right.”

We bring the blood out to Shauna who wants to recount our night’s adventures for Darron. He’s not having it, though, and says he needs some “me time” and heads off to bed.

“Is he mad at us?” Shauna asks, sipping her blood.

“He’s mostly mad at me,” I assure her. I wanted to apologize and offer to pay for the shoes, but I have zero money to do that. I don’t know if Darron will ever forgive me. He calls his wardrobe the ‘second love of his life’.

“What’s the next step, boss?” Shauna asks.

I tilt my head. “I need to get some sleep.”

“Oh, sure. I guess I’ll just be here. Awake, for like, ever.”

“You did really well tonight,” I tell her.

“I made a lot of noise and got stuck in a jar,” she says.

“We went in kind of blind. Maybe you can do some research? You can tell me a bit more about the Monarchs. That way next time we’ll be prepared.”

“We…?” Shauna looks so happy I said we. “I can do that. I have the time.”

“Great. Yes.” I head up to my room and am happy to find only one of my pillows has been chewed up. But at least Shit is happy to see me and jumps on me, licking my face.
